One-click update: Fix file permissions to prevent WordPress from asking for FTP credentials

posted in: Server | 0

While uploads and direct theme-updates worked like a charm on my WordPress installation, I had some difficulties updating the core tonight.

According to the support wiki, I checked all files and folders to be owned by www-data. Everything seemed to be fine. It took me some minutes to realize, that the /var/www/ directory itself was owned by root and prevented WordPress to perform the core update.
